Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light. Matthew 11:29-30 NLT
In the ancient world, a wooden yoke was placed on animals to bind them together for accomplishing and sharing work. We have Amish neighbors scattered throughout this part of the United States and can occasionally see them still using this method for farming. A primary ox, one with experience and strength, is yoked up with a younger, weaker one. The primary ox endures most of the weight and makes the assigned job possible and easier for the weaker one. If the young ox has the “freedom” of doing the work alone, he will be quickly wearied and overcome. Yoking him up is not removing freedom or being condescending – it is an act of wisdom and care for the young ox.
When we are yoked to Christ, under His authority, several things are NOT happening:
He isn’t taking away our freedom. He is giving us protection to have the best life possible.
He isn’t condescending to us, thinking us incapable or unworthy. He is showing us the highest value.
He isn't giving us his problems to carry. He is stepping into our struggles and carrying them with us. When Jesus asks us to take His yoke, He is saying, "Partner with Me."
Jesus invites us to trade the heavy burdens of performance, legalism, and self-reliance for aligning with Him and becoming a co-worker with Him. The Pharisees created man-made rules and burdens that crushed the spirit. We still do that. But Jesus' yoke is "easy.” He is humble and gentle (the Greek word chrestos is the word “easy” and can also mean "well-fitting.”) and what He gives us will be just right for each person. His expectations are rooted in love, grace, and mercy, and allow us to truly rest. When we cooperate with His authority, we find freedom from the exhausting need to prove ourselves or earn approval.
- So, if the Son sets you free, you are free indeed! (John 8:36 NLT). Walking with Jesus, partnering with Him, sets us free from everything that enslaves us. It is not an illusion. It is not a hope that will be fulfilled in heaven. It is real, permanent, and freely offered to everyone who chooses to align themselves with His authority. This is our privilege today!
