Creating Space Through Fasting

Creating Space Through Fasting

October 2, 2026

Today’s Scripture: Matthew 6:16

Fasting is one of the most overlooked spiritual practices in the Christian life.

When many people hear the word fasting, they immediately think about giving something up. While fasting does involve abstaining from food or another activity for a period of time, its purpose is much deeper than self-denial.

Fasting creates space for God. Notice that Jesus did not say, “If you fast.” He said, “When you fast.” He assumed His followers would practice this discipline as part of their relationship with Him.

Fasting temporarily removes something good in order to focus on something greater. It reminds us that our deepest need is not physical satisfaction but spiritual connection. Every hunger pang becomes an invitation to pray. Every craving becomes a reminder to seek God.

Fasting also helps expose things that may have a stronger hold on our hearts than we realize. Whether it is food, social media, entertainment, or another distraction, fasting reveals how dependent we have become on temporary things.

Most importantly, fasting redirects our attention toward God.

  • It slows us down
  • It creates margin
  • It helps us listen
  • It reminds us that Jesus alone truly satisfies

Fasting does not earn God’s favor. It simply positions us to seek Him with greater focus and intentionality.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

Choose one thing you can fast from this week—a meal, social media, television, or another distraction. Use the time you gain to pray and spend time with God.

PRAYER

Jesus, You assumed Your followers would fast, not to earn Your favor, but to make space for You. Help me willingly set aside good things to seek something greater in You. Let every hunger turn into prayer, and reveal anything that holds my heart more than You should. You alone truly satisfy.
